VCOSS Rural and Regional Training

The VCOSS Clearinghouse is proud to present the 2011 Rural and Regional Training Program.

The Rural and Regional Training Program will be delivered across Victoria with sessions run in Hume, Lodon Mallee, Gippsland, Barwon South West, Grampians and Melbourne. The program will deliver 40 face-to-face training sessions for staff and volunteers from the Victorian Community Sector.

Matrix on Board is proud to be delivering the Strategic Planning and Making Sense of Financial Statements training sessions.

Matrix provides post-training support free of charge to participants for up to three months from the date of their Financial Management or Strategic Planning training. Participants can access this support via telephone or email.

Participants can engage with a community of social enterprise and non-profit knowledge sharing at the Facebook MoB Discussion Forums. Remember to ‘Like’ Matrix on Board first to commence your involvement in the Forum.

Strategic Planning

This one-day workshop, presented by Matrix on Board, is suitable for staff, boards and committees of community organizations that want  to conduct a strategic planning process in their organization.
It is designed to assist staff, board and committees to:

  • Develop a greater understanding of the impact of strategic planning
  • Consider strategic planning in relation to community development, action research, capacity building, strength’s based analysis and the recognition of incremental improvements as important indicators of future success
  • Learn practical methods to undertake an environmental assessment, set strategic directions and goals, and develop and implement a strategic plan
  • Identify the role of the board, staff and community in the strategic planning process

This workshop will encourage questions and active participation from attendees across a range of practical scenarios common to many non-profit organizations.
This workshop is based on the methodology used by Matrix on Board in working with organisations to develop strategic plans, and uses tools developed to support this process.

Making Sense of Financial Statements

This one-day workshop is suitable for staff and Boards of non-profit organisations. The content explains accounting concepts in plain English and demonstrates financial management and training in practical and relevant examples.

The workshop is intended to assist staff and management committees to understand:

  • The difference between accrual verses cash accounting
  • How accrual accounting impacts on revenue and expenditure
  • The role of provisions and their impact on expenditure, liabilities and financial viability
  • Basics of budget development and monitoring
  • How to prepare and read financial reports, including the Balance Sheet and Income & Expenditure Statement
  • Terminology and elements of a financial statement (e.g. assets, liabilities, equity, income and expenditure)
  • Legal obligations of staff and boards when making financial decisions, and the role of financial statements
  • Accountabilities of the board and manager
  • Terminology used in the auditor’s reports, and how to best work with the auditor
  • Implications of taxes for non-profits, e.g. GST, FBT, PAYG

This experiential workshop will encourage questions and active participation from attendees across a range of practical scenarios common to many non-profit organisations.

Previous participants have said the training empowers them in their roles as decision makers, and that it takes the mystery out of financial management.
